Rolex is known for its classic and traditional timepieces. It is not one to release a new model every other year. In fact, before the introduction of the Rolex Sky-Dweller in 2012, it had been 20 years since the brand had released a watch, which was the Rolex Yacht-Master in 1992, and the Rolex Daytona was the last model to be released before that in 1964.

The very first Rolex Yacht-Master was the 11628 in 18ct yellow gold with a white dial and the Rolex 3135 movement. The Yacht-Master was designed for the seas and had a design very similar to that of the Rolex Submariner. The Rolex Yacht-Master was positioned as the luxury version of the Rolex Submariner. The Submariner was the watch for those who wanted to go on an underwater dive, while the Yacht-Master was the perfect watch for the man watching to enjoy his day on a Yacht or in the club house. Despite its triplock crown, the Yachtmaster only has the ability to reach underwater depths of 320 feet and was clearly not made to accompany divers on their underwater adventures. Simply put, the Yacht-Master is for above water, while the Submariner is for under water needs.
